Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most fun, emotionally diverse, and well written shows ever made.
Note; I didnt say "cartoon" I said "show". This isn't near the top of a subcategory of tv, its near the top of tv period.
And I almost didn't watch. I tried a few episodes, and, by the 3rd, I almost gave up.
It just didn't seem anything special, and the 3rd episode seemed very cliche, and seemed almost like a 80s era cartoon trying to teach kids something. Yes, girls can fight as good as boys can, we get it. Move on.
But, after giving the show longer, it got better and better. Good humor, well motivated characters, genuine dilemma's.
Most of all though, a richly painted world. Borrowing from many real-world cultures, but still managing to make something new, this is a breath of fresh air in a genre filled with lazy Middle-earth style settings.
The storytelling also has long, epic arcs. Things are rarely easy or causally resolved. Things very much developed over time. Characters learn and change. The state of the world as a whole changes as well.
I wont summerise the premise, as you can watch the intro for that (embeded above). It doesnt really do justice to the show though. This is a show filled with imagination and strong characters....very much recommended for anyone that can get past the first few episodes.
Additionally, after the shows over, they should consider the comics ("The Promise") and the sequel series "Legend of Korra", both by the same writers.
