Traffic – Traffic – 1968

Traffic is Steve Winwood. When the other musicians understood this, they left, the band fell apart and Steve Winwood needed a few years to get his act together and emerge as a white soul singer we’ve all come to hate, especially during the 1980’s.

This album, their second, is completely different: folk pop one could call it, but with melodies that may be memorable but are in reality quite difficult to hum along to. Dave Mason is an important writer, singer and guitar player on this album, mostly famous for the single Feelin’ alright? Some of his other songs are quite memorable as well, most notably You can all join in and Don’t be sad. Winwoods’ songs seem more difficult as they are more sophisticated, more advanced and more complex. The folky feel, with flutes and, strangely, saxes make this album something of an anomaly in the period. Not recommended for Winwood fans of the solo years, but a nice addition for any 60’s lover, just like the first album, Dear mr Fantasy.
