Star Trek Hidden Frontier is one of a number of fan made star trek shows you will find online. Set as a sequel to the star trek shows/films, it centers around the patch of space first shown in "Insurrection". This feature length episode, from the 8th season, is the final for the show.
à  It would naturally be unfair to compare this directly to any professionally made show, but surprisingly it has many points in its favor vs the official star trek shows. Despite having a near zero budget, and everyone working for free, what they pull of is very impressive and larger in scope then Paramounts work. This episode emphasis's the shows plus points, and has the series going off on a high-note.
The complex and ongoing plot threads from the previous seasons are wrapped up nicely in a plot that can only be described as epic. Every character's is used fairly well, and in many ways the reduced budget of the show can be seen as helping the plot. Because they arnt worried about making the special effects look as good as possible, they instead are free to do whatever concepts they like. Sure, this ends up with very poor looking Poser-models occasionally making appearances, or Bryce-like landscapes for backgrounds. Oh, and lets not forget the ever-present green-screen issues. But if you look past that it has some great ideas. Ideas they arnt scared of not showing due to budget constraints.
Its a shame the official star trek cannon ran out of ideas with Enterprise, because these people working for free showcased more in the last few episodes of their series, then in the whole of Enterprise.
While it probably was the right time to end the this series, I'm quite happy there is two spin-offs to try.
