If "Pacific Rim" was a cliché 12 year old boy banging action figures together then Jupiter Ascending is a stereotypical 12 year old girl year writing fanfiction.
Written by the Wachowski Siblings, its like most of their work a visual treat and clearly a love letter to a genre they like.
I recovered a early draft of the film below, taken from a star and heart encrusted notebook...
And then and then she finds out shes a....Space Queen!
Meanwhile one of the total hunk heroes, who are also at times gruff and brooding, reveals he is actually a...SPACE WOLFMAN....she quickly falls in love with the space wolfman but then it turns out she has to marry...
Its clear that in recent years one of the Wachowski Siblings has got in touch with their feminine side - probably Andy.
That said, its not that bad. It chucks enough ideas to keep it going, and we don't get too many unashamedly pulpy sci-fi these days. It has more in common with, say, Flash Gordon then pretty much any modern film you can name.
With a few tweaks it could have been a great movie rather then just bits of ideas with potential jumbled together. Pacific Rim was certainly more consistent and more satisfying to watch.
The other problem is the protagonist falls down and gets saved by a guy on jet boots about 3-4 times during the movie. This gets quite repetitive and was clearly a fullback when the scriptwriters couldn't come up with another way out of a big action set piece.
Overall, while a good enough movie for classic sci-fi fans, it would have benefited from more time developing the script to give avoid repetitive stuff like the above and to give proper plot-arcs to some of the secondary characters.
