Spider Island is a excellent "event comic" set in the Marvel universe.
Its written by Dan Slott, who somewhat gently reinvented the spider-man character with his "Big-Time" arc. Peter is now employed in a leading tech-firm, Aunt May is living with someone else, and his former Boss is now Mayor of NYC.
These changes have all added some much needed freshness to the storytelling, as well as fix some long running problems (like why a tech-genius like Peter would be broke all the time). All these changes are also used very effectively in this storyline.
Spider-Island premise is simple: what would happen if everyone in New York started getting spider-mans abilities?
The obvious answer is chaos - which the story exploits for both drama and comic effect, maintaining a entertaining balance between the two.
Everything comes together in a fairly satisfying way, and certainly ranks as one of the best comic events I have read.
Its also worth reading , Spider-Island: Avengers which is a hilarious story set at the same time.
