I been working my way though Buffy, and after the fantastic season5, season 6s start was mostly a disappointment.
Then we came to this. This is exactly what I needed after seeing BSG's terrible ending. This was a perfect antidote to bad, depressing, or monomoodistic tv.
A 42minute musical full of twists, great humour and revelations.
While I've seen this eppisode a few times now, and its the only episode of Buffy I actualy own on dvd, it nethertheless still stands out to me as one of the finest pieces of television ever created. Everything, is pitch-perfect. (no pun intended there, honest).
Everytime I see it, I hear new details in the lyrics, or spot how good the directing is. It would be easy to dismiss this as just a expiremental bit of fun, but instead they made it the centerpiece of half a dozen running charecter plotlines. It would probably be the most important eppisode of the season, in fact. An incredible amount is pumped into 42 minutes and its overall probably Whedon's best work.
Save, except, for Dr Horrible of which it of course laid the groundwork for.
