Rate Condition

Postby Fishos » Sat May 03, 2008 9:41 pm

Since I found about Rateoholic I KNEW there was something I needed to say, and it was always on the tip of my tongue, and I think I just found out what it was!

Rate Condition.

Expalantion: The hardest thing for me when giving a score out of 100, is that I always feel like I'm not being honest. Why? Because the score I'm giving is not just for the film, it's for watching the film in a certain condition.

I can watch the movie Click today and it will be wonderful, but watch it another day and it would be a very bad movie. It's not because my standards are lower today, but because today I had something that this movie required to be enjoyable.

Example of use:
Score - 87%. Conditions: Have basic knowledge about football, be familiar with modern greek culture.
Score - 21%. Conditions: Don't be an American, be in a cheery mood.
Score - 100%. Conditions: Be a very hard core Legend of Zelda fan.

..
Thoughts?

Not bad point.
When I first saw Van Hilisen I thought it was one of the most fun movies I ever saw, while at the cinema I learnt over to my friend and said "This will be the next Indiana Jones", and he agreed.
Later, when it got quite bad reviews I was baffled, and seeing it later on dvd it created no where near the same impact. Sure, I still found it fun, but more of an 80% rather then a 90% type thing. Something about the viewing conditions might have influenced the film.
This could also explain why I enjoyed Superman Return, and Harry Potter 5 a lot more then most people (I saw both in Imax3d).

On the other hand...it could be I just like them more then most anyway on my first viewing. Short of erasing my memory its hard to be sure.
But yes, viewing conditions should be a factor.

However, I don't think I would include personal viewer-specific things in this like some of your examples.
"be in a cheery mood" Id find more relevant then "Be a Zelda fan".

Because, given enough reviews and long enough, the system should already be putting at the top of your lists reviewers that are similar to you in terms of taste.
So, to me, it seems useful to add "Conditions you experienced this in" rather then "Conditions you find relevant to enjoy it".
The second gives more information, but I think assumes too much.
I want people to find new things to try using Rateoholic, and not be put off by reviewers assumeing people need to be like them in certain ways to enjoy it.

Personaly, I look forward to finding really bezire links between fandoms :)

Cool that you consider the idea!

What I meant by "be a Zelda fan" was more of a, if the movie is all about Zeldas and Links and stuff, and it requires previous knowledge to fully appreciate the movie. But then again I didn't make myself clear because I said "very hard core" :P

How about...

Mood required/relevant/experienced: [Cheery] / [Homicidal] / [Pissed off at little brother] / [lust for Animal Balloon Fetish]
Previous knowledge required/relevant/experienced: [American culture (satire)] / [Advanced Quantum physics (academic movie)] / [Legend of Zelda (movie about timeline theories of Zelda)] / [The birds and the bees (porn)] / etc.

Oh, right, I thought you meant a Zelda game. (thus I was thinking being a fan is not required, as you might like games like BG&E).

But I guess a potential Zelda film might require knowledge of the games. A bit like Final Fantasy Advent Children I might have found less completely random and godawfull if I actualy played more of the games :p

Yes, deviding previous knowledge and mood up is also good.
(People might then, at some point, like to search for a movie to watch when in a certain mood)

I'll have to rearrange the review-edit box though, it will be getting crowded with all this stuff.

I'll probably have an expandable "advanced" section with a few things in. (Map link certainly, I'll have to find about the rest).
