The Beach Boys – Smiley smile – 1967

With Pet sounds Brian Wilson wrote a record that amazed Paul McCartney. With Sgt Pepper’s lonely Haerts Club Band, the Beatles rose to the challenge an triggered Brian to come up with his next step. Due to a lack of interest to experiment in other band members (notably Mike Love) and his unstable mental health, Brian broke down. The projected follow up was partly recorded but never released in its intended form til 2004, when Brian Wilson, with the aid of many therapists, new wife and the Wondermints, led by Daniel Sahanaja released Smile 2004.

In 1957 he had Good Vibrations, a song you may know, and Heroes and Villains, a song you should know. The rest were ideas, snippets of songs and some other Dren. When their record company demanded ‘product’ and Brian could not deliver, this album was released. Any album that contains the two aforementioned songs cannot be all bad, and as a matter of fact I quite like the result. However, it is a very uneven product, with perfectly crafted songs and demo-like ‘songs’, such as Little pad, Wind chimes and Wonderful.
