Roger Waters – Amused to death – 1992

Roger Waters can hardly play bass. His singing is an acquired taste, not unlike Paul Simon, Phil Collins or Mark Knopfler. It’s not plain awful or off-key, it just lacks any distinction, compared to, say, Peter Gabriel or Jim Morrisson. Sometimes a nasal whine, sometimes very sarcastic or even sadistic, but usually more speeching than singing. This may not be a coincidence, because this is where the lyrics come in: some of the most profound (but pessimistic) lyrics to be found apart from Dylans’ best work. Not just good lyrics on a song by song basis but forming an integral part of a concept. Yes: Roger Waters is the master of the concept album. Whether a vague notion of longing for past friends (Wish you were here) or a pessimistic post-war dream (The final cut), his lyrics may be sad but they are always interesting.

Other musicians, whether in ‘his’ band Pink Flyd or hired for his solo albums tend to be very good. For this album he asked Jeff Beck to participate, and boy, does he participate. Some of the soloing on What God wants is simply amazing. This is his best solo album and ranks with the Wall, Animals, Wish you were here and Dark side of the moon as the best album he has ever been involved in. Also, it’s quite a lot better than Momentary lapse of reason and the Division bell, latter day Pink Floyd albums sans Roger.
