Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, Bach...and I suppose Pink too.

Emerson, Lake and Palmer – Works Live – 1993

The release date may seem confusing. This is indeed the famous ELP plus orchestra tour from 1978, but in a pimped version, doubling the original size. Like the Grateful Dead in 1974, and Pink Floyd with the Wall in 1980, Emerson, Lake and Palmer also went on tour in the decade of indulgence with a set up that was bound to break records, unfortunately including the one of “earliest financial disaster for creatively successful tour”. It is OK to travel by separate limo’s, and possibly separate planes for a touring group with assorted management staff. It is, however, simply not feasible to do do the same with a complete symphony orchestra. Trying this was a creative triumph but a financial disaster.

Anyway, it left us with a nice memory on cd. The first cd starts with some nice, even popular tunes, including the great version of Henry Mancini’s Peter Gunn theme, with great synth and bass work. Towards the end of the cd we get slightly less commercial with Aaron Coplands Fanfare for the common man and Knife edge. It’s the second cd where ELP show their professional skills however. First Abaddon’s Bolero, a Keith Emerson piece, totally unrelated to Ravel’s Bolero save for the rhythm, followed by Pictures at an exhibition, which borrows more from Ravel’s orchestrated version than from the Mussorgsky original, but is still something to be savoured as a seprate work of art. The interpretation is actually better than on the 1971 album of the same name. Then we get Closer to believing, which almost could have been sung by Sinatra, and Piano concerto Third movement, another Emerson piece. We finish with Tank from their debut album and we are relieved it is all over. Ladies and gentlemen, this album shows the good and the bad of the excesses of the 1970’s in a great way, and deserves a place in any serious popular music collection. If not in the first 500, then in the second 500…
